International Women’s Day: celebrating innovation, leadership and impact

The startup ecosystem is still largely male-led - a fact that’s far from new.

It makes us think about how much stronger and richer this ecosystem could be if we had:

  • More women founding startups
  • More women investing
  • More women mentoring

Not as a matter of ticking a diversity box, but because every perspective adds depth and strength to the ecosystem.

On International Women’s Day, we don’t just celebrate achievements. We reflect on possibilities. At MeOut Group, we work every day to build innovation ecosystems, education pathways, and entrepreneurial opportunities where women are not the exception, but a driving force.

The story behind International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day began as a movement. In the early 20th century, women across Europe and the United States demanded better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights. In 1910, at a conference in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international day dedicated to women’s rights.

By 1911, the first celebrations took place. In 1975, the United Nations officially recognised March 8 as International Women’s Day.

What started as a labour movement became a global call for gender equality, women’s leadership, and systemic change.

Women who shaped innovation

Behind many of the technologies and scientific breakthroughs we rely on today, there are women whose names are not always highlighted enough:

  • Hedy Lamarr, co-inventor of frequency-hopping technology that paved the way for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Marie Curie, pioneer in radioactivity research and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
  • Grace Hopper, who helped shape modern computer programming.
  • Stephanie Kwolek, inventor of Kevlar.
  • Josephine Cochrane, creator of the first practical dishwasher.

Innovation has never been limited by gender. Opportunity has.

Women in entrepreneurship and innovation: where we stand today

The numbers still tell a clear story:

  • Women-founded startups receive a significantly smaller share of venture capital funding.
  • Female representation among startup founders in Europe remains disproportionately low.
  • Women are underrepresented in leadership roles across tech and innovation sectors.

And yet, diverse teams consistently show stronger resilience, more creative problem-solving, and long-term sustainable growth.

Women in education and vocational training

Change does not start at the investment round. It starts in classrooms, training centres, and mentorship spaces.

Empowering women through vocational education and training (VET) and international mobility programmes strengthens both local and global ecosystems. When women gain access to practical skills, green competencies, entrepreneurial mindsets, and cross-border experiences, they become leaders in their communities.

At MeOut Group, our education and innovation projects are designed to create safe and ambitious spaces where young women can learn, experiment, and connect internationally. Through mentorship, capacity building, and ecosystem collaboration, we support women in stepping confidently into entrepreneurship, sustainability, and innovation leadership.

Women who lead: open call for speakers at the EU-Startups Summit

On this remarkable day, as we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and impact of women everywhere, we’re also reminded that the startup ecosystem is still largely male-led.

Do you want to help change that?

We are looking for women who are ready to speak openly about their challenges, lessons learned, failures, resilience, and successes on stage at the EU-Startups Summit.

If this sounds like you or someone you know - apply here.

From awareness to action

International Women’s Day is not just a date. It reminds us that ecosystems are not only built with capital and technology - they are built with stories, role models, and visible leadership.

When more women step into the spotlight, mentor others, launch ventures, and invest back into the community, something shifts. Not suddenly. Not loudly. But steadily.

And that steady shift is how ecosystems transform.
